Analysis of Automated Emergency Braking Systems in Automotive Applications

Submitted : Fall 2016

The goal was to determine the viability of a simulated FMCW radar system that was linked to a virtual automatic emergency braking system to assess its practicality when not made by an automotive manufacturer. FMCW is a unique radar in that it doesn’t have a narrow bandwidth so it isn’t as affected by environmental factors and doesn’t need to go very far to sense a nearby vehicle at speed, also it has very low computational and power requirements, so it’s a good choice for the automotive realm. Matlab code and Simulink models were created and configured with various RF integrations and filters to emulate these real world factors. The final simulation was able to detect incoming obstacles and avoid collision by braking or mitigate damage by reducing velocity as appropriately as possible.
