Optimization of Length of Conductor Material in Power Lines

by Charles Roehm

Submitted : Fall 2016

This project investigates the factors which determine the length of hanging cables in overhead power lines.  A similar project by Eric Costello is referred to, in which an error was found.  Newton’s method was done by hand to determine the scaling factor for the catenary curve. The effect on length of other factors such as conductor temperature and wind were discussed, with an example of how it could be applied.
