Negative Pressure Wound Therapy and Blood Loss

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is the use of a vacuum to treat wounds. The first NPWT device was the Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) developed in 1990. The purpose of NPWT is to drain fluids from a wound along with increase blood flow to the area, preventing coagulation of fluids and reducing risk of infection. The purpose of this project was to show the effectiveness of NPWT at different severities of blood loss; mild (<250mL lost), moderate (500 mL lost), and severe (>1 L lost) blood loss. I found that NPWT can effectively treat wounds that have resulted in less than one liter lost.
