Optimizing Area of Fields for a Farm

by Pablo Cabrera

Submitted : Spring 2015

A farmer hires a landscape architect to fence off three rectangular fields with a river bordering one side of each of the fields. The side that borders the river does not require any fencing. The farmer has a maximum amount of fencing he can use and wants the each field to have different amounts of fencing but for the difference to be the same between the three fields. Find the dimensions that will result in the largest area for each field.
