Modulus of Subgrade Reaction and Deflection

by Austin Potts

Submitted : Fall 2009

To determine moments and maximum deflection for the bending of bars (pavement) on an elastic foundation some valuable differential equations are utilized. Through solving these equations, the reaction due to the deflection of a point load acting on an infinitely long beam is shown. Also, using various modulus of subgrade values (support values of the layer below a rigid pavement surface), the affects of two concentrated loads on an infinitely long beam supported continuously by soil are shown. This proves that the lower the modulus of subgrade value the higher the maximum deflection and maximum moment.
