May 2010 United States Poverty Rate

by Amy Morina

Submitted : Spring 2015

Based on the Current Population Survey data the United States poverty rate was estimated for March 2010. First, the poverty rate for each household size was calculated using integral calculus and the poverty thresholds released by the United States Census Bureau. Then the weighted average of these results was calculated to find the overall poverty rate in March 2010 to be 19.95%. This estimate was compared to the actual poverty rate released by the U.S Census Bureau to gauge the accuracy of our methods.
