Radioactive Decay: St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant

by John Kirkham

Submitted : Fall 2014

The goal of this project is to determine the length of time that the contaminated drinking water that the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant would contaminate if the plant experienced a nuclear meltdown. The duration of time that it would take for the radioactive materials in drinking water to decay down to safe levels for human consumption can be determined using a differential equation of exponential decay for radioactive decay for the radioactive elements that they use to generate electricity for the surrounding communities.
