Compressor Optimization

by Brian Coelho

Submitted : Fall 2013

For this project, the goal is to work based on Figure 1 which provides with a diagram for a three stage compressor. Given this, the pressures P2 and P3 must be found which will maximize the total work per unit mass needed for the compressors to function. This is where partial derivatives and optimization comes into play. First, an equation which demonstrates a total work per mass unit must be formed and provided. P2 and P3 will be the left over variables, once all of the values are placed within their respective locations throughout the equation. There are two variables present, so to find the pressures where the least amount of work is done by the compressors, partial derivatives must be used.
