Work From A Stirling Cycle

by Elizabeth Lee

Submitted : Spring 2013

The goal of this project is to find expressions for the net work and the maximum pressure of the Stirling cycle in terms of the compression ratio r=VH/VL. This is so that comparisons can be made for the net work and maximum pressure against the compression ratio. In order to develop the expression for net work, the van der Waals equation of state was substituted into the work equation provided and then integrated with regards to volume. In order to develop the expression for maximum pressure, the compression ratio and the volume relation and the state 1 equation were combined. Once the graphs were plotted for the net work against the compression ratio and the maximum pressure for the compression ratio, then the graphs show the relationship between the net work and the maximum pressure and the compression ratio.
