Minimizing Overtime

by Abraham Vargas

Submitted : Fall 2012

A private ambulance company is experimenting with various ways to minimize overtime hours for its employees. One factor of interest is the number of ambulances that are available to take calls once a particular shift reaches its end-of-shift time. For the solution we will fit a function to the data with the help of mathematical software. We will then compute the relative high and low points of the function using the extreme value theorem. After computing the relative extrema, a conclusion will be made concerning the ideal number of units that should be available to take calls.
