Springs! An Experiment Concerning Spring Constants and Damping Ratios

by Laura Beauchemin

Submitted : Fall 2012

Harmonic oscillators are in many everyday objects. This experiment uses calculus and position, velocity and acceleration data obtained from three springs to determine if there is a correlation between the spring constant and the damping ratio. It was found that the three springs tested were underdamped and that higher spring constants yield higher damping ratios.
