Analysis of an Adiabatic Batch Reactor

by Sarah Urrutia

Submitted : Fall 2012

The hydrolysis of acetic anhydride in an adiabatic reactor was simulated using calculus in order to determine how the concentration of the reactant A (acetic anhydride) and the temperature vary with time when such reaction occurs in an insulated adiabatic reactor with an initial temperature of 293.15 K. Using the Euler marching method with small time intervals, the given concentration and temperature at each specific time were determined simultaneously. Also, using the equations set up and based on the given initial concentration of A, the time it took for 95% of conversion to occur was also determined. Furthermore, the same simulation was done using an initial temperature of 303.15 K and the changes were observed and recorded. Lastly the reaction was simulated under constant temperature and changes in the results were noted and examined.
