Optimum Gear Ratios For An Electric Vehicle

by Timofei Novikov

Submitted : Fall 2012

To solve for the gear ratios in the transmission, a function t was created that was a total of the individual times spent in each gear. t(GR1,GR2,GR3) is a function of the first 3 gear ratios in the vehicle's transmission. The critical points of the partial derivatives with respect to each gear ratio were calculated in order to minimize each time ti that were spent in each gear. Once the gear ratios were derived, they were plugged into the known equations to compute times and velocities at the shift points.
