Volatilization Of Benzene In A River

by Eric Dunlop

Submitted : Spring 2012

The objective of this project is to find the concentration of benzene, a volatile organic compound, in parts per billion as it flows through four consecutive sections of a river. After deriving how to calculate the concentration of a contaminant as it flows through sections of a river, we can use the volumetric flow rate to further understand how the rate of volatilization has an impact on the changing concentration levels of benzene as it flows through each section of river. Being a volatile contaminant some of the substance will evaporate into the air as a function of time.
