Design of Grain Hopper

by Eryk Marsak

Submitted : Spring 2011

An open-topped grain hopper, in the shape of a triangular prism, is to be constructed of metal. This allows it to be rotated around a pole passing along the axis at its base so that its contents may be easily dumped. The hopper is to have a volume of 32 m3. Find the slant height, base length, and overall length that will minimize the metal surface area required.
