Pollination of a Canary Tree Flower

by Abbie O'Hern Weeks

Submitted : Fall 2010

For this project I did an observational experiment of a Canary Tree flower at the USF Botanical Garden. I measured the diameter of the flowers opening and compared it to the ability for a pollinating creature to access. I also graphed the growth of the flower from bud to death in relation to the size of the flower. From this graph I determined the function of the trend using a system of equations and used Newton's Method to discover the time in which the flower is available for pollination. From this method I was able to conclude that pollination can occur for a 9 day period.
