Benzene Volatilization from a River

by Caitlin Frank

Submitted : Fall 2010

The purpose of this project is to analyze benzene discharged into a river. We want to determine if the concentration of benzene would drop to an acceptable level by the time it reaches the end of section four/a water treatment plant given different characteristics for the four different sections the contaminate would travel.

I used a model given for the concentration of benzene as a function of time  and integrated it for each section to the concentration at the end of each section. Given the information that 5 ppb of benzene or less would be considered an acceptable level, I concluded that by end of section four, the benzene concentration will still be too high and will require further treatment.
