Kinetics of Atmospheric NOx Reactions

by Tyler Stewart

Submitted : Fall 2010

Nitrogen compounds emitted from tail-pipes of automobiles include NO and NO2. Once these gases are emitter they undergo the following reactions:

NO + O3 = NO2 + O2                with rate constant k2

NO2 + O2 = NO + O3                with rate constant k1

We wish to track the concentration of NO and NO2 with time. Often, this is done using a “box model” in which the reactions are placed in a simulated box and allowed to react. Please prepare plots of [NO] and [NO2] as functions of time in minutes for a total time period of 5 minutes. It is recommended that you use a first order Euler method with a time step of 0.01 minutes to integrate the differential equations.
