The Optimum Compression Ratio for an Otto Cycle Engine

by Jason Sharma

Submitted : Spring 2010

This propose of this project is to provide an overview into the calculations behind the power provided by a single cylinder of an automobile engine. This paper will be outlining the procedures in finding the ideal compression ratio (VH/VL) that will maximize the net work done per cycle in which the ambient condition of the air is 298K, the volume (VH) is 100 cm3, and the Pressure (P1) is 1 bar, and the maximum combustion temperature is 3000K. This paper also determines the ideal temperature and pressure in the four cycles of combustion (Isentropic compression, Constant volume heating, Isentropic expansion, and Constant volume cooling).
