Torque on a Dam

by Ashley Masuck

Submitted : Fall 2018

For my project I found torque on the hinge of a gate of a dam by the force of the water. How I was taught in physics is when we use integration we need to use a small piece of force and small piece of torque. We do this because when we do integration we are finding the amount over a range of the area of the gate. I feel this question I was given shows what I learned this semester in both calculus two and general physics.

In the mathematical description and solution approach the first half of my work is setting up the problem. I waited to put in the numbers in until the end because it keeps the numbers more organized and knowing which variables are constants and which are not constants.
