Seasonal Algal Growth in Lake Tahoe

A field experiment conducted by the Lake Tahoe Water Quality Investigations Program involved testing for concentrations of algae both near the shore and mid-lake locations, and recording observations. Scientists working on the project found that  the concentrations of algae were influenced by two variables: the surface temperature of the lake and the lake depth. Using the calculus concept of linearization, a linear growth rate for the algae in Lake Tahoe can be approximated based on the two said variables. The approximation revealed that growth rates for the algae in Lake Tahoe are highest during the colder months and lower during summer.
