Calibration of Conventional Bioretention Filters Using Tracer Data

by Bryce Fields

Submitted : Spring 2018

The objective of this project is to determine how tracer chemicals like Potassium Chloride (KCl) can be used to calibrate conventional bioretention filters. The program Hydrus 1D is used to simulate an unsaturated bioretention filter being infiltrated with stormwater over a period of 5 hours. The tracer chemical KCl is used because because it can infiltrate the sand used in the filter without being absorbed. Since the KCl is not absorbed by the sand, the amount of KCl put in the systems should equal the outflow of KCl after being processed through the entirety of the filter.
