The hull of a broken ship is made of steel, considering the amount that might be recoverable from it, recycling might be profitable. There are two possible options to consider, either sink the ship in a nearby location to create an artificial reef or scrap it. Recycling the steel requires calculating the amount of material available, the price of its extraction and whether it would be profitable or not. This project will focus on how to calculate the mass of steel by using measurements taken from the ship and a design of the hull. The design will be sectioned to approximate the real shape of the soft chine hull. Furthermore, using the known draft of the vessel and transforming the sections into mathematical functions their areas can consequently be calculated using definite integrals. By adding the volumes obtained, it's possible to procure the amount of water displaced by the ship. This displacement in addition to the average density of the water in which the craft is immersed, will allow for the mass of the ship to be determined. Finally, in order to reach a decision, an estimate on how much money can be generated by selling the steel for its ruling price can later be compared with cost estimates for this ship's breaking process.
