302. Analysis of an adiabatic batch reactor

by Alondra Soto

Submitted : Spring 2016

This project is about determining the reaction time needed for the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride in an adiabatic batch reactor after it is ran with water to make the reaction pseudo-first order. To do so, Euler’s method was used to solve the equations for the temperature and acetic anhydride concentration as a function of time, as the temperature is increased beginning with , then , and then using a cooling jacket to maintain a temperature of . It was found that as the temperature was increased the reaction time decreased. This was confirmed both numerically and analytically for the concentrations.
