Optimization of a Chemical Reactor Train

by Christopher Aquino

Submitted : Spring 2014

The project’s problem that was given is to determine the optimal temperature, volume and number of reactors to minimize the individual/total cost of a CSTR (Continuous stirred tank reactor). In this specific reaction we are interested in manufacturing nylon that needs an end concentration to be 1/10,000 of its starting value. With the knowledge of derivatives based on Calculus 2, Partial derivatives of Calculus 3 and complex algebra the values of each unknown variable will be obtained.
