Volume of Gas Tank Calculus Real World Application

The determination of the volume of the gas tank was necessary to perform this project. The preceding was necessary because without it the conclusion of whether or not there was enough extra space in the gas tank at full capacity, which was modified to hold more gasoline, could not be determined. The modification required removal of the fill hose, which goes deep into the tank cutting off the flow of gasoline before the tank is actually full. To make the tank fill up more the original hose had to be removed and replaced with another set up that ended at the top of the tank so the gasoline could fill to the top of the tank. The first step in finding the volume of the gas tank was to remove the tank from the Jeep. Measurements of the width, length, height, material thickness, and radius of the rounded edges were taken. The measurements where then used to draw a to scale gas tank in 3D on AutoCAD. By using this program, the gas tank was divided into multiple sections, in each of which the volume was found. The volume of each of these sections was added up to determine the total volume of the gas tank. To check my calculations, I used AutoCAD to find the exact volume of the gas tank before and after the modification. Once the total volume was calculated, I then found the specifications online for the factory set capacity of the fuel tank. Conclusively, it was ultimately determined that making the modification to the gas tank was significant because after modifying the tank gained 28.68% more gasoline.
