Satellite Receiving Dish

by Aaron Galentine

Submitted : Fall 2013

Mathematical properties of a parabolic satellite receiving dish were explored, in order to find the meaning of the slope of the tangent plane of the dish, using a given equation of a circular parabola and a point on the surface of the parabola. The equation for the tangent plane was found through partial derivation and using an equation to utilize values found through partial derivation as well as points given. The slope of the tangent plane was found in a similar fashion.

It was found that the receiver should be placed evenly away from all points on the satellite dish, in order to ensure that the signal is optimally reflected to the feedhorn.
