Volume of Refractory Material

by Lydia Yocum

Submitted : Spring 2013

In this project, the volume of refractory material needed to cover the inside of an Electric Arc Furnace used in steel mills was calculated. To calculate this volume, I used the shell method. The overall volume of refractory material needed came out to 6.145 meters cubed. This information can be used for companies who build the refractory material to know how much material is needed to cover the inside of an electric arc furnace. Steel mill furnaces all around the world need refractory material for protection and calculus is used for calculating the amount.
