Calculation of Centroids

by Nicole Hoffman

Submitted : Fall 2012

For this project, I needed to be able to find the centroid of an arbitrary shape using either an equation of a function or with the x and y values. In the first method, I used the equation from the graph and solve it analytically by finding the integrals of the functions. The second method required using the x and y values in Excel with the trapezoidal integration through a step size of L/100. With either of those methods, I was able to calculate the integral using calculus needed in order to plug into the centroid formula. I found out that solving it via using Excel (numerically) or solving it analytically would end up with the same result.
