Heat Flow into a Semi-Infinite Solid

by Natalie Edinger

Submitted : Spring 2012

This project consisted of many steps, all of these steps led to finding the rate at which a wave of heat transfers into a semi-infinite piece of steel. The first step was to derive a differential equation which was specific to the given scenario. This equation, used to find temperature, was dependant on time and position. After solving for this equation, we used the results to find the specific heat flow for steel with the given included heat capacity, density, and thermal conductivity. These values were then entered into Excel and with the use of the proper functions, we can conclude heat takes approximately 24 hours to move one meter into a steel solid.
