Water Optimization

by Nicholas Keller

Submitted : Spring 2012

For this project I was tasked with maximizing a water purification companies’ profit in a year, and the gallons per year of purified water that are produced. The problem is that the company uses an adsorbent to purify their water, which degrades over time. Because the adsorbent degrades, less purified water is produced for a given amount of feed as time goes on, so I needed to find the most efficient time that the adsorbent could be replaced. Using the information I was given, I constructed a complicated formula to find the yearly profit. What this formula consisted of will be explained in more detail later on, but by using it, and by using trial and error, I was able to find the efficiency and time the company needed to maximize their profit.
