Soccer Ball Ballistics

by Kaitlin Ivy

Submitted : Fall 2011

This project is relevant to the science of soccer because, generally, the teams submit balls for use during the match. The degree to which the balls are inflated, corresponding to variation in size and hardness of the balls, and the conditions on the playing field or “pitch” coupled together may affect the overall gameplay of the match. This project illustrates classic engineering principles relating to trajectory, and applies the physical concept of ballistics, which tests the circular path of movement that an object takes as it is projected from one point to another. This project will consider air resistance through the calculations, and will consider the Euler method in order to solve the mathematical simulation.
