Car Suspension Meets Speed Bumps

by Derrick Lewinson

Submitted : Spring 2011

The suspension system of a car is designed to provide a smooth driving environment, but how smooth can a car travel over a speed bump. This project looks at how a car handles a particular speed bump while driving at different velocities. Using mathematical equations the solution was as simply as the faster the car is driving the less of a jump the car experiences. The Force exerted by the suspension and Upward force on the tire equations given by Wolf Chambers was used to then find the acceleration formula, and then the integration of the acceleration formula was then used to find the velocity.
