Grain Hopper Optimization

by Jason Sharma

Submitted : Fall 2010

An open-topped grain hopper is to be constructed of metal with the shape shown below. This allows it to be rotated around a pole passing along the axis at its base so that its contents may be easily dumped. The hopper is to have a volume of 20 m3. Find the lengths A, B and L that will minimize the metal surface area required.
