Nitrogen and its Facilitation of Growth in Aman Rice

by Matthew Yungaitis

Submitted : Spring 2009

Data was collected on nitrogen concentrations in Aman rice plants. The relationship between concentrations of nitrogen in plants and product yield is graphed using Microsoft Excel 2007. These points result in a curve of the 4th order polynomial demonstrating a nitrogen tolerance in the given organism. Using calculus, the derivative of the growth rate function can be taken and the rate at that given point calculated. The function is equated to zero to find the critical points. It is concluded that nitrogen is beneficial to the plant until a certain point. Too much of the nitrogen can result in adverse effects.
