Sustainable Harvesting

Across the globe fish populations are declining, especially the Chinook salmon population

present in Alaska.  This phenomena can be related to a multitude of factors including

global warming as well as overfishing.  This project focuses on the aspect of overfishing

and how to reel back its effects.  Sustainable harvesting of fish populations allows for

populations to continue in their normal growth rates, while still obtaining a suitable

amount of fish to feed the people.  In this project I have identified this as a problem and

have shown a way to take fishing practices back to a sustainable level through the use

of find the equilibria using derivatives and determining the exact amount of harvest that is

allowed in order to keep the population in a healthy state.  From this process I have

determined that using these equations will create a simple way to determine exactly how

many fish may be taken per harvest in reference to the growth rate of the population and

carrying capacity.
