Optimization of a Fuel Cell Electrode

Submitted : Spring 2016

This paper seeks to optimize the power density efficiency of a fuel cell by finding the optimal electrode size with a given load. Through the process of optimization the power density was maximized and the current density, voltage, and current were used to calculate the optimal electrode area. These results were then verified by comparing current density and power density over a given range of voltages. Finding the maximum power point at this optimized electrode area is important for engineering applications because a fuel cell operating at the maximum power point for a given electrode area will yield the most efficient conversion of chemical energy to mechanical energy. Thus minimizing wasted chemical energy within the given system that the fuel cell is powering.
