Frequency Analysis Using Discrete Fourier Transformations

by Logan Kelly

Submitted : Fall 2015

The purpose of this project is to show that the Discrete Fourier Transformation can be used to analyze samples of audio to find their most powerful frequencies. Wolfram Mathematica can be used to easily calculate the DFT and determine the peak frequencies within an audio sample. These calculations would be tedious if not impossible to perform by hand. These frequencies can be used to identify the audio by matching the findings with known information. This project shows that numbers pressed on a telephone using the standard Dual-tone multi-frequency signaling system can be identified using the Discrete Fourier Transform.
