Calculating the moment of inertia of a flywheel

by Chelsea Hudgens

Submitted : Spring 2015

In this project, the formula for the moment of inertia of a flywheel, modeled as a solid cylinder, is derived from the general form equation for the moment of inertia. The resulting formula is consistent with the known formula for calculating the moment of inertia of a solid cylindrical object.  The formula can then be applied to determine the moment of inertia of any flywheel or similar cylindrical object.
