Finding the Volume Held by a Champagne Glass

by Austin Ribickas

Submitted : Spring 2015

Three different methods, finite disks, an equivalent cylinder of average diameter, and regression analysis calculated in Excel, were used to approximate the volume of an object using a champagne glass. A champagne glass was chosen because the accuracy of the three methods of approximation could be tested against the actual volume of the glass. Distinct differences in accuracy between the methods were noted. This problem is important to mechanical engineering because there are many objects that cannot have their volume measured since they may either be too large or will be altered or destroyed in the process.
