Variable Drag Coefficient for a Winchester .356 200 grain bullet

by Stephen Kussmaul

Submitted : Fall 2013

The focus of this project is to test and prove greater accuracy for a proposed variable drag coefficient versus the standard that is currently used. The standard is a constant which will be shown as inaccurate at supersonic speeds. The proposed formula uses a variable drag coefficient in relation to the speed of sound in air. In this project the formula was combined with data gathered from the Winchester ballistics calculator on a Winchester .356 200 grain bullet. This was then entered into Excel and used in conjunction with the equations of motion developed for both cases to validate the variable coefficient of drag model’s accuracy.
