IR through Mathematics

by Alok Singh

Submitted : Fall 2013

The goal of this project is to determine the mathematical reasons for the differences in peaks of two similar functional groups on an IR spectrum. The project will focus on a derived Hooke's Law equation and the Fourier-Transform relation as those are directly related to Fourier Transform Spectroscopy. The functional groups that will be examined are alcohols and carboxylic acids, as their peeks are usually close in proximity and sometimes hard to differentiate at around the frequency of 3000 (cm -1).
