Fill Needed for a Highway Overpass

Submitted : Spring 2013

In this project I had to calculate the volume of fill needed for a highway overpass. In order to do this, all conditions stated within the problems asked were taken into account. After this, I took each individual function provided and set them equal to two quadratic equations. From here, there are six unknowns that must be found (a,b,c,d,e,f). All answers are in terms of x, L, and H. After finding the unknowns, I proceeded to find the area of the trapezoid provided while keeping things in terms of L, W, H, and α. After retrieving the area, I used this equation to calculate the volume. In order to do this, I had to integrate this area formula from 0-L/2 and from L/2-L and add the answers together to get the total volume. From here I plugged in the values given in part three and got an answer for the total volume needed for the fill needed for a highway overpass. In conclusion, the total volume needed for a fill needed for a highway overpass is 32628.78 m3.
